(Faux) Fashion Friday: All Velvet Everything

Yes. We covered the world of luxurious and glam fashions last week in honor of the annual Sundance Festival.

But we're just barely into award season, so if you think we're done fangirling over the fancy and fabulous fashions of the rich and'd be wrong on an awkward number of levels.

The fabric of ~FAME~

Jackets: The most absurdly upscale brand you can imagine and definitely NOT the DI we mean it.
This particular textile has been around for AGES. I mean...
King Louis XIV I feel you so much man thx a million for all the fashions homie
but it has since the 17th century been adapted into countless new silhouettes that should, nay, MUST be used in order to effectively display power, status, and ultimately fine taste.

I own all of these. #HMU if you want to borrow.
dead serious if you didn't rock one of these in LITERALLY every color back in 8th grade there's a good chance we won't have any horribly awkward adolescent stories to share at our next sleepover and if that's the case I'm thinking the chance of a good friendship might really be slim to none #sorry
So, clearly we can see that velvet is among the most versatile fabrics one can wear, so how can we take it from "runway" to "hallway"?
Channel your inner middle-aged secretary of the 1980s, of course!
Going with one of our chosen looks of the day, you can really do no wrong.

Pay attention to the little details, such as an intricate embroidered sleeve (but not Holls' split ends. Focus on the artwork here, folks). or even throw on a pair of velvet pants AND velvet shoes to complete the look. No such thing as too much in this case. Ever.

And remember, the more ill-fitting, the better. If dudes can still get by with saggy pants, surely I don't have to get my $5 (I mean $5,000) blazer tailored. No sir.

So, during these next few weeks when we're bombarded by the lives of the rich and famous, channel your own inner diva and invest in some new ~fancy~ velvet pieces. You'll be glad you did.

Nate Archibald wholeheartedly approves this message.

Go forth and be fabulous,
Birdie & Holls

WWWW: Time.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my mind around the concept of time. It’s like you’re just doing you, living the dream, and you wake up one day (late for class) realizing that 15 years have gone by and life isn’t about chasing the ice cream truck, getting the Spiderman popsicle with the bubblegum eyes and begging your older sisters to play mermaids with you in the pool.

I wanted to be so many things when I was a youngling thinking about growing up. I remember writing down that I wanted to be a policeman in 1st grade because I didn’t know that a policewoman was a real thing (perceived gender role socialization at a young age, perhaps???). Who cared, though? I was a reckless kid with curled in front bangs that had a lifetime to really think about being an adult. I could also beat you in tetherball hands down so.. like I said, living the dream.

rare home video of me in my childhood

I’d like to think that most people have something that reminds them of home/their childhood. It might be a pair of old cleats, an old stuffed animal with the stuffing coming out, a birthday card from grams, a Backstreet Boys 1999 Millenium CD you stole from your sister at some point, etc etc (you get the idea). What is it about that representation of the past that means so much to a lot of us?

Boy band memorabilia aside, I have a dreamcatcher that I think is pretty nifty. My dad used to be a truck driver and would always bring us back presents, probably from dingy truck stops, but we loved them. I remember him telling us kids the meaning behind a dreamcatcher as we were sitting around him wide eyed with our majestic items he got for us no doubt from Pocahontas herself. I wasn’t able to sleep the first night it was hanging over my bed because I WAS SO EXCITED IT WAS GOING TO CATCH  BAD DREAMZ. MY MIND WAS UNSTOPPABLE. GOOD VIBES ONLY.

The sun goes up and then goes down. Days happen. Interests change and some friends come and go. Your priorities change and you become more realistic about your future (what was i THINKING, POLICEMAN??) Does it ever kind of hit you? You’re growing up, you’re trying to get your act together, and some days you think about what happened to all of those years.

ugh Wingapo, gimme inspiration plz

I am now in my early twenties. There are no ice cream trucks to chase around here (although I should really consider investing in one in this college town wow idea of the year #patented). Courage the Cowardly Dog is on Netflix but it doesn’t give any frights anymore, just the creeps. I’ve got responsibilities, an education I’m really happy to be invested in, and no interest in becoming a police(wo)man.

If you’re ever around little kids, you’ll notice that they’re all probably stuffed with fairy dust or some other toxin that gives them the greatest outlook on life. Their imaginations are so expansive and slightly intimidating, especially when they show you up during bedtime stories. They never stop dreaming. Anything is possible for these kids.

if you don't remember this episode you better believe I'm judging you

At what age did that go away for us? When did we look out of the window (probably melodramatically with sad Kelly Clarkson playing) and stop pursuing our dreams? When did we become so complacent?

When did I stop believing in my dream catcher?

If you could have a conversation with the six year old you, what would you say? Would he/she be happy with who you are now and what you’re becoming? Would you take the offer and have a conversation face to face with yourself?

Honestly, I’d be so much like ~grandmother willow~ and mysterious it’d drive the young me off the wall. I’d probably just tie my six year old’s sketchers and simply tell her to always dream big and often, no matter how old she got, because the only way dreamcatchers stop working is if she stops dreaming at all.

My dad said so.

p.s. I am laughing so hard at this.
I love the internet.

MM: Grammys

Quick question.
What kinda Music Monday would this be (what kind of BLOGGERS would we be honestly)
if we didn't have an opinion on last night's award show?
That's what we thought.

Neither of us currently have live TV available at our apartments, so buckle your seat belts.
It's time for
This list is comprehensive and we had opinions on all performances, so if you particularly care/don't care about a specific one just do your thing.

Let's start from the top. It's our one and only Queen B (and husband) so I don't think anyone should have a problem with this performance and if you do we're totally done here.

How is she real? I mean HOW does she look and sound like perfection in every single thing she does. My mind can't wrap around it.
And OMG she and Jay-Z and Blue Ivy just love each other too too much.
Can't handle.
And they have enough Grammy's between the two of them to just hand one to baby Blue for funsies.
Stopping here bc I'm dead.

Next up: Lorde.
All we gotta say is that we need the name and number of her manicurist.

But real talk. 2+ Grammys during her first year of existence essentially and she's only 17.
We've got at least 4 years on this girl and we can't even decide on a time to record our first real music vid together.
We'll still be her best friend though as long as she doesn't make us wear her black lipstick.

Hunter Hayes.
He's just cute. That's all.

Katy Perry.
Can't wait to play this song at my next Halloween bash!

Robin Thicke/Chicago
Without the distraction of Miley (although love you missed you Miley), we could actually focus on what a cool jam sesh this was. Hashtag impressed. But we're still over you.

Keith Urban

John Legend
Sing me to sleep every night pleeeeease always and forever

Taylor Swift
Still constantly lusting after her fancy dresses even though we don't really wear fancy dresses but we're still girls so we're hard wired for this sort of thing.
Way way way more impressed than ever about how her live performances have improved.

Except like RIP to her neck muscles. We have a few chiropractors we could recommend to take care of that.

P!nk/Nate Ruess
Hearing their song on the radio, never really felt like their voices went together all that well.
They were impressive live though.
But wait. P!nk is an actual acrobat now?
Or did we seriously miss something whilst half-heartedly following her career since the Missundaztood era?

Ringo Starr
Lovely. More on him later tho.

Imagine Dragons/Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick you the homie and we all saw that text Mack sent about you getting robbed so good vibes all around, man~
Also THX for not acting out that creepy Muppet themed music vid onstage!

(T Swift once again making us feel good about our dance game)

Kacey Musgraves
First: Where did she even come from?
Second: The song, the outfit, the sparkly boots and neon cacti represented everything I (Birdie) hated about Texas, srry.

Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr
Someone give us some daisy chains, white summer dresses and a VW van bc suddenly we're like the BIGGEST flower children right now.
We mean that.

Willie Nelson/Kris Kristofferson/Merle Haggard/Blake Shelton
Commentary by Birdie while watching: "Oh no. Oh no no no no no. I do not like country music on principle. But I like this. I like this so much. Oh NO. DANGIT My Texas is showing."

Daft Punk/Pharrell Williams/Nile Rogers/Stevie Wonder
Well Daft Punk clearly stole the stage this night, but who's complaining?
First of all: HI STEVIE WONDER HI HOW YA BEEN??!??! :)

Second: We know how easy it would be to just Google what Daft Punk looks like in the flesh, but like...not gonna happen.  They're so mysterious and shiny and perfect and FRENCH and like so
Once the mystery is gone, the undeniable "cool" factor will be also.
Finally: so cute how Pharrell isn't even a member of DP (we still love and respect you despite your hat Pharrell) but since DP doesn't want us to think they actually speak a language that us mortals can understand (maybe they don't who knows??), he accepted all their zillions of awards for them. Good man, that Pharrell.

Sara B/Carole King
Gorgeous classy ladies with gorgeous classy voices. Too bad the song is the CHEESIEST.
Still cute. Whatevs.

Metallica feat. Lang Lang
First need to mention that Jared Leto is the culmination of everything good and beautiful on this earth.
Sweet throwback tho, Metallica. Rock on.
We also need Lang Lang to compose a dope piano rock narration of our lives.  Don't we all need that?

The whole Macklemore/Ryan Lewis thing

you be the judge bc this is a controversial topic???!?!
(But also feel free to talk to Holls about this because her Poli Sci senses are tingling)

Miranda Lambert/Billie Joe Armstrong
September has ended about 10 times since the early 2000s when Green Day became a thing and Billie Joe STILL hasn't updated his look. Can't win 'em all.
Side note: Birdie used to sing this song in a somewhat successful band with her dear father back in the good old days, so them singing "When Will I be Loved" got her all nostalgic and crap.
....and the recording didn't even show the Nine Inch Nails thing. So we've got nothing on that one. Sorry.

A general round of applause for the music industry this year.
You all outdid yourselves once again, and didn't even creep us out (that much) this time.

Here's our playlists of the week, featuring music old and new from this year's winners and nominees.

And finally, as the cute Yoko Ono says
Peace out,
Birdie & Holls

(Faux) Fashion Fridays: Fur-eaking Fabulous.

Honestly, did you expect anything less than fabulous from us?

Birdie and I recently had the chance to frolic around the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week and besides walking down the street with Selena Gomez (chasing/fangirling) we noticed some fashion trends we NEEDED to share with the rest of you folks. You, too, can stay ahead of the curve. Just follow our lead.

1.The most important thing you’ll ever own is any type of fur

ugh 50 i feel you
Of course, no A-lister there was actually wearing any kind of fur, but the rest of the pretentious peasants that lurked the streets were all about wanting to get scouted and made sure they looked the part (hopefully by not killing any real animals because we’re not about that life. save the whales etc etc.)

Blue alternative fur: way too expensive at the thrift store
cool brown fur: priceless
2. In order to appear as subtly famous as possible, plz wear floppy hats and large sunglasses to blend in with the crowd

Holly Golightly is that u bby i can't tell??
who are these indviduals??
*For extra fashion, add sparkles to the edges of your glasses
3. last but not least, wearing heels for hours which will most definitely cause permanent damage that strangely alludes to the past Chinese tradition of foot binding for women to have smaller feet in order to appear more how you become famous. Trust us.

this was just necessary for you to see.
nailed it.
probably flirting with a celeb with these on.

So, there you have it folks, our outfits of the day. Dress like this casually and you'll stand out just enough to be questioned as a celebrity without the hassle of actually being one (which is all that anyone wants, anyway. You're welcome).

****side note: also start speaking in a British accent. 10/10 would recommend. If not to throw people off, to see how spot on your Hermione impression is.
